B. At the Big Dance...

6. The Events

One of the key points to keep in mind during the entire competition is, "Be Early." The dance waits for no one. Scheduling is important. Try to be in the ballroom at least half an hour before you're scheduled to dance. Solos can usually be shifted. Freestyles are frequently combined if the program is running behind. Ensure you have enough time to get to the ballroom from your room. Bring all the clothes you will need. If you have half an hour between dance sets, it's best not to run up to the room to change. If you have more than an hour, you can go up to your room, unless you want to stay and watch the others dancing.
  1. Be aware of how the competition is being run. There usually is an "on deck" area. This is where you'll begin walking out onto the dance floor for your freestyles. They will begin lining you up according to the program, as the previous heat is starting. It is important that you stay in the on deck area and listen for your name and number to be called by the on deck coordinator. Ladies, remember your number is your instructor's number. Stand where the on deck coordinator tells you. While you're in line, you can mentally prepare yourself for the heat.
  2. There are lots of different events going on during the competition. You'll see solos, formations, freestyles, one dance championships, full scholarships, professional competitions, and professional shows. You'll also see vendors selling dance related wares. It's always fun to shop around. You really don't want to miss much.
  3. You're there for yourself as well as the other students. Be considerate. If you want to wander off and see other things besides dancing, you're free to do so, as long as you keep in mind when you're supposed to be in the ballroom dancing. Try not to make your instructor hunt you down, unless it's an emergency. They have other things to worry about, like getting themselves where they need to be, and making sure ALL of their students are prepared. If you want company on your jaunts, ask around. There may be some students who are free for a period of time who would be willing to accompany you. However, you shouldn't expect people to drop what they're doing to accommodate your needs. Be responsible for your own needs, and I'm sure everyone will have a much better time.
